Yoga as Medicine is an extremely informative
book where Dr. Timothy McCall describes the
benefits of yoga versus traditional healing methods
from his experience with both allopathic/Western
medicine and his experience as a yoga
practitioner. The remainder of the book is
interviews with famous & experienced yoga
instructors as to how they would offer solutions to
different ailments. Some of the included diseases
are: arthritis, insomnia, obesity, anxiety, diabetes,
and depression.
Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha  is an
informative text written and published by the Bihar
School of Yoga in India. It provides a great
introduction to the basic poses and breathing
techniques that lay the foundation for a strong
yoga practice. Of course to make sure you are
doing the poses correctly it is important to attend a
yoga class.
Light on Yoga is another foundational text on the
alignment and benefits of yoga postures. Iyengar
studied with Krishnamacharya who helped bring
Yoga to the public. Iyengar has developed a
system of alignment that brings the body into its
healthiest form. This book is a reference tool with
pictures and all of the necessary information. In
the beginning Iyengar talks about the 8 limbs of
yoga and the end is a discussion and introduction
to pranayama. The best part about the book is the
index with poses that help alleviate diseases and
the supplementary chapter that outlines a 52 week
routine for students.
Spontaneous Healing lays a good foundation for
the novice in self-healing. Dr. Andrew Weil, trained
at Harvard's Medical School has traveled all over
the world to find the secrets to a long life. He
discusses the body's natural ability to fight disease
and how to develop a preventative health routine
in your own life. In the end he has recipes that will
enhance your body's ability to absorb nutrients.
Great book for someone who has never read Dr.
Weil but is interested in alternative healing
techniques.
The Neti Pot is a MUST-have. If you suffer from
allergies, asthma, sinus problems or general nasal
discomfort at any time of the year, this will help!
Jala Neti, the practice of running salt water
through the nostrils, releases blockages, cleanses
the nasal passageways, and stimulates the 3rd
eye. It improves eyesight (I am speaking from
personal experience), relieves snoring issues and
sleeping problems. The pollutants that go through
the nose on a daily basis can be very harmful but
luckily we have the nose as a filtering system. Take
good care of it and improve its function by
including the neti pot in your morning routine. Even
Oprah says so! If you do buy this product and

It SHOULD NOT hurt to do. It is painless and simple
if you are doing it correctly!
Raja Yoga is a wonderful short read on the
practice of the philosophy of yoga. Swami
Vivekananda, still very well known in India as a
modern day saint, came to America in 1887 to
spread the knowledge of Hinduism and yoga in the
West. Raja Yoga is a set of principles to live by
that transcend the limits of any religion. Swami
Vivekananda also includes his translation of the
Yoga Sutras in this book. So if you want to dive a
little deeper beneath the layer of asana and
pranayama (postures and breath) this is a good
text to accompany you.
Many of these tools are to take your practice to a deeper level. You may
spend years using your mat, strap and block, but there are many
aspects of the philosophy of yoga that can transform your life. Perhaps
you get a sense of it when your teacher uses words like accept, believe,
imagine, visualize, compassion, and love. To go beyond the mat is to
share your passion, those things that have changed your life for the
better. And here I am sharing some of the things that have changed my
life. Starting with yoga and radiating outward, I hope you feel the rays of
light that I have been given.
